As a professional sailor turned media crew, I’m looking forward to telling the story of this voyage as it plays out before us

Mark Covell

Position: Media Crew

Age: 42

From: Scotland, UK

As media crew I find myself writing my own biog. I hope that it won’t be long before one of my team mates total rewrites this through their eyes.

I grew up in and around sailing as my father ran a sailing club on the English South Coast. Dyslexia shaped my school life, leading to me concentrate heavily on other life skills and a qualification that didn’t require reading and writing. Windsurfing, Sailing and working with my hands seamed to be the natural direction. I left school and trained to become a traditional boat builder picking up skills I still use today. I have always worked for myself and this has given me the flexibility to work hard, sail hard and play hard. I’ve always enjoyed photography so when I had a chance to join the crew in the Volvo Ocean Race as on board media man, I leapt at it.
I’m 2m tall and describe my self as “Not small”. Being a big lad has shaped the sailing I do and the boats I sail. I have had a great life through sailing and hope my young family follows me into the marine world. I have a daughter Emily age 10, going on 16 and a young son Freddie who is a very tall 3 year old. I’m lucky to be married to a very understanding wife who on the whole puts up with my mad ideas and projects.
