A heroes welcome from OmanA heroes welcome from Oman

As Majan slowly motored into The Wave marina in Muscat, the 200+ strong crowd rose their flags into the air to welcome the crew finally home.

Family, friends, press, VIPs and Oman Sail staff gathered on the dock to see Majan and her crew for the first time since the 6 February, 97 days ago. The families and close friends got the first attention from the crew.

Mohsin got to see and hold his baby girl, Thura for the first time. Although the dock was heaving with people and TV crews, cameraman and journalists jostling to get the first pictures and the comments of the crew, Mohsin just stood transfixed holding his daughter. He was totally oblivious to the mayhem around him. It was very touching for the crew to watch. He told me later that he could not take his eyes off her – and could not see or hear anything else but the baby in his arms.

Slowly all the kisses and greeting embraces were over and the media interviews and questions started in earnest for local and global press and TV. Over 100 school children had come down to see the festivities and were hugely excited.

Majan was made ‘open house’ for all the guests to see round and inside her – they marvelled at the small spaces that our seven strong crew had all been living in for nearly three months. Most of the children were all over Majan – quickly into every corner, over the outriggers and down in the cot bunks like little worker ants. They wanted to see everything on board, press all the buttons, wind the winches and also to know how it all worked. And of course – they wanted most of all to jump on her bouncy trampolines. Whilst the youngsters were seeing Majan for the first time, we felt we were seeing the Oman Sail sailors of tomorrow.

All the stories, the highs and lows were retold on the dock as the crew were interviewed about the voyage. Today we docked as seven crew, but we have been 10 in total to sail Majan around the Indian Oceans 5 Capes Race. Thierry Douillard, Mike Gilles and Yann Reignau added great value to the mission. Mohsin and Mohammed, and all the crew would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their help, hard work and dedication to Majan and Oman Sail.

This chapter of the Indian Ocean 5 Capes Race is now over, we look forward to the next. Majan and crew are home safely, and satisfied we have given the Race our all. Majan has stood the test superbly, as can be witnessed by the condition she was in when we arrived. Within a few hours of the celebrations she is due straight back out with VIP guests on board. That’s quite something for a race boat at the end of 16,300 mile ocean race and a testament to her design and construction.

After the home coming we have just witnessed, we can safely say that Oman had given the crew a heroes welcome.
